Local Business SEO - What You should know

As a business owner, you probably have more on your mind than SEO. However - if you want to get business from the web - and today, it's often the case that the lions share of our business comes via the web - it' important that you have, at least a high level understanding of what SEO is and how it can effect your business.

There's black hat - which is "outlawed by Google" - and will probably get your site de-indexed and banished to the deep dark parts of the web, where no-one will ever ind it. There's white hat - which is the type that is approved by google. This includes things like on-page optimisation, use of video, image optimisation and white hat link building.

The reason that you would want to build white hat links to your site is because the more relevant links from other sites to your blog post - means to Google that your site is a respeced authority. Just think about it... Who would link to rubbish content.

So to get authority links - you need to have linkable content. That means that you have to provide content that is high quality, informative and helpful to others.

Often there s little or no done to small or local business websites - because the owners maybe feel that it is un-necessary - or it's an expensive luxury.

But getting found on the Google search engine is the number one source of new business leads for most small businesses. Youtube is the second largest search engine - and you should also consider getting found on it too.

The minimum amount of content now - is to have multiple supporting articles - at 500 words and more. And video helps too - both embeded video and linked video. Social profiles and purposeful activity on them has a positive effect.

So, smarty pants... what does it take to get on page 1 of Google?

A few things done right for starters and you'll be well on your way.

1. You need a website. Not a facebook page - you need a proper website. And by proper, I mean a site that's built on wordpress (or drupla).
N.B. Stay well clear of the "easy to use and free" site builders like Wix, Weebly and Squarespace. You might build yourself a nice looking site, but unless you have no competition - it will never see the light of day.

2. Keywords. Start by choosing 3 or 4 keywords or phrases that your customers would use to search for your "thing". For example - if you do crash repairs - they might search for "car body repair", "crash damage repair", "dent fixing", etc.

3. Content. Now you have your key words or phrases - you need to write some decent content, based on each of these keywords. Back in the day, you'd get away with one article each per keyword. Now, it's got competitive - so you'll need 3-4 articles per keyword. The more content Google sees on a topic on your site - the more authority it believes you have - and Google likes authority.

4. Unique content. You can not simply copy and paste content that you've "borrowed" elsewhere. You'll need to write unique content pieces - and no duplication of content on your own site either.

5. Links. You'll want internal links between pages. Outbound links to other authority sites and links to your site, from people who like your content. The more links - the more authority your site has!

6. Pictures and video. Embedded pictures and video are great for Google. Embedded Youtube videos and links from YT videos are great. Optimised video and pictures.

7. Logo's on your site help add authority.

8. Name, address and phone number and make sure that they match the name address and phone number that are listed anywhere else.

9. Social media links from Youtube, Twitter and Facebook

10. Citations which are mentions of your website from other sites with authority across the web.Citations from universities are extremely good - but also extremely hard to get.

11. Schema. This is a marking up of your content and overall site that tells Google what your site is about, who you are and where you are. Not many SEO's understand this enough to be able to use it well.

Get these 11 points down and you'll be off to a great start. In fact, if you get these right, you'll probably be ahead of 75% or more of the competition.

Why You Need a Website

What, No Website? Here's why you need a website.

It's really surprising just how many businesses don't have a website in 2017..

I've been doing a little bit of research on this over the past 2 months. I'm just really interested in finding out why that's the case.

Having spoken to nearly 100 business owners, who don't, over the past 2 months, they've given several reasons why?

Here they are:
1. They don't know where to start. They aren't a techie and don'y know anything about how to get a website.
2. They got prices for it in the past - but it was too expensive.
3. The don't see the value in it / don't see the point.
4. "My customers wouldn't look on the web for us".
5. "I've never gotten around to it".

If you don't have a business website, there's a good chance that your reasons fall into one of the 5 categories above.
If you have a different reason - I'd love to hear from you...

Anyway, I'm not into arguing that anyone's right or wrong. If you don't have a site and feel that you don't need one - and you're happy and busy - I'm happy for you.

For anyone else who's not busy - and probably not happy with that - here is my humble opinion. Here's why you need a website.

Not being a techie is no reason for not having a site. Lets's assume for a minute that you're a kitchen manufacturer/ fitter. Do you need to know anything about engine repair/maintenance to have a van? You wouldn't let not knowing how to change the oil stop you from having a van for work?

Same goes for having a website. Someone else will look after the techie stuff and let you get on with your work and running your business.

You really need to ask yourself Why you need a website

If you've gotten a price for a website in the past - you may have been put off by the prices.Yes, some websites can be really, really expensive (our's are not). I have a friend who builds websites for doctors and medical centres. He charges anywhere from 10k and up for a website. That's pricey.

At the other end of the scale, you an get a really basic, template site for €49.
As much as I'll tell you that you don't nee to spend the price of a family car on a business website - similarly - don't believe that you'll get a website for the price of taking the kids to the movies on a Sunday afternoon!

I've had people ask me on more than a few occasions - about the €49 websites. All I can say is - be realistic. What do you think you'll get for that kinda money.
Seriously... A decent website will be the most valuable tool in your business. It's a 24 hour, 7 day a week salesman. when something is gonna bring in the enquiries for your business - put a realistic value on it.

Next point. They don't see the value in having a site!

If you had a billboard, with flashing neon lights, on a busy road that has thousands of people passing it every day - what type of business would you have to be in, not to get phone calls?

I don't care what business you are in - but you have competitors. and if your competition has a website - they are getting customers that should be yours. They are eating your dinner! No doubt.

You have nothing to loose by having a decent business website.
You have everything to loose if you don't!

"My customers's aren't looking for us on the web"... Ya' think so? I can't think of a single business that I've talked with over the past 2-3 years that wouldn't benefit from having a site.
Google is your friend - but only if you have a website.

Never got around to it - maybe if you've been rushed off your feet since 2005 - you could be justified with this answer.

During the last recession - while many of my competitors in my engineering business when out of business - we were flat out. We were honestly really busy, while many business owners that I knew and talked to were struggling. I'm not saying that to brag. Definitely not. A lot of people suffered because they had no work. But the ting that helped us was I had gotten very good at marketing - that includes having a good website that was bringing in lots of business leads and enquiries.

A website is not a magic bullet. It will not solve all your business problems. But a decent website and a little ibt of marketing will get you far ahead of your competition, bring in new customers and get your cash flow healthy.
