What is SEO and what can an SEO consultant do for you?

If you are a business owner, or you work in a business and are tasked with the marketing or sales responsibility - then this is for you.
All businesses need a steady flow of new customers to survive and grow. Unfortunately too many businesses in Northern Ireland exist in survival more. Few small business owners will openly admit to it, but there are far too many who exist hand to mouth. They desperately need the next customer, client or patient to keep the lights on and the doors open. It's a very sad state of affairs, but short term cashflow is keeping many small businesses afloat. There are lots of little things that contribute to this - no one factor is to blame, but they include things such as prices being too low, insufficient demand for the product or service and sales occurring too infrequently.

What could an SEO in Northern Ireland possibly do to help resolve these nasty problems?

Read on and I'll tell you in a minute!

What is SEO and how can an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland help you grow you business?

Lets start with a brief explanation of what SEO is:

SEO is the magic that happens to get a website placed on the first page of the search results... Okay - so it's not magic. Some people might actually thing it is magic, but it takes lots of good old work, a bit of planning and applying the grey matter that you have between your ears. And maybe throw in a bit of technical knowledge into the mix for good measure too.

Joking aside - you've done a few searches on Google before? Maybe you were looking for a garden centre, or a boiler repair company, or a mechanic to fix your car?
In any of these searches, you will have noticed that there are a number of businesses listed on the first page of the search results. You probably contacted one of the businesses listed on the first page? (Most of the buisness goes to the companies listed inthe first 5 results on page 1).

Well behind page 1, there were more businesses listed on page 2, page 3 and so on...

Page 2 is a very quiet place to be for any business. Those on page 3 won't get any calls unless the businesses on pages 1 and 2 don't answer their phones! It's just never gonna happen.

If your business is on page 3 - your days in business are possibly numbered. Sorry but thats true.

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimisation. In short, there is a way f presenting the information on your website so that your site is seen by the search engines as being more relevant than your competitors.

SEO is NOT just about putting words on a page. Search engine optimisation is about structuring the content on the website. Adequate, relevant, quality content, presented in a way that Google or the other search engines can read and determine the relevancy of your website to a search term.

SEO Consultant in Northern Ireland ...

Okay - tell me what an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland can do for my business?

There are lots of people who call themselves SEO Experts - but when they have to ask for help to rank their own website - you kinda have to question where their expertise lies?
Anyway, as I mentioned above, search engine optimisation requires quality, relevant content - and structure. Structure is extremely important. the structure tells google how to read and interpret the content of your site.

To you, the words on your website might seem pretty east to understand, but Google is a machine and it requires the data to be presented in a particular format so that it can understand exactly what your product or service is and how it relates to the search terms. SEO is as much of an art as it is a science. It's actually a bit of a "black art" as lots of people who work in the field of SEO don't eally understand how it works. Don't confuse this with "black hat" seo - that's bad and is likely to harm your website and your business...
What we do is strictly white hat and will not hurt or do harm to your website.

Now that you know what SEO is, what can an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland do for your business?

Let me start by saying that I'm not just an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland.

I am born and bred and live in Northern Ireland, not far from Newry. If you've been in business for any length of time, you have likely been email assaulted by hoardes of indians offering you SEO?? I'm your local SEO guy - not from some far off land! My clients get my mobile and landline phone numbers as well as my address - so they can contact me in any way they like!

I'm as much a marketing consultant as I am an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland. Oh, and i love sales too - so I do help businesses to develop their sales processes as well as help get them found. I've written sales letters and marketing pieces to help them generate more enquiries. For one will writing service in the UK, I've developed and delivered the sales training for their call centre staff - so that they can be better at helping their clients when the calls come in.

I truly love what I do in terms of SEO. I really enjoy getting businesses found at the top of the search results, but that doesn't help the client if they can't generate more sales and customers form being in that position. That's where my marketing and sales skills come in handy.

I'm not going to claim that I'm a one stop shop for all thisngs marketing and sales - because I'm not. I'm a really good, highly skills SEO consultant in Northern Ireland that also happens to be very proficient at helping businesses with their marketing and selling processes.

I've got some friends who are fantastic sales trainers, others who are top-gun copywriters - and I readily refer my clients to these real experts when they need that kind of help. But to add value to my clients, I want to help them get the biggest return on their investment with me as possible - so I add my marketing and sales assistance into the mix for free - value added service.

I am not a cheap SEO consultant. If you are looking for low cost SEO then there are lots of indians in your email inbox - raring to go. God only knows what you'll get from them - very often not a lot... But, like all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Your local SEO consulant in Northern Ireland

SEO is not for everyone. If you get enough new customers from word of mouth referrals and local newspaper advertising then you may not be looking to get business from your website?
I would never suggest that you abandon something that already brings in business in favour of another method. In fact, I would suggest that you use as many methods as you can profitable do, to bring in new customers.
If anyone suggests that you stop everything else and DO their thing - RUN away! They are dangerous to your business and your livelihood!
Use, or at least test - as many methods as you can do PROFITABLY. If one method of marketing brings you £2 of income for every £1 spent - then keep doing it.  But if you test something (a radio ad, newspaper ad etc) and it fails to bring in any leads, or generates sales at a loss - they you probaby should stop doing it.
There are not many businesses I know of that would not profit from being found at the top of the search results... If you think you business is one of them, I'd love to hear about it.

Choosing an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland

Before you start your search for an seo consultant in Northern Ireland, here are a few things you should consider:

1. How do your current customer find you? Is it from the web/ from radio adverts or newspaper or somewhere else?

2. If a stranger were to search for your product/service on the web, what would they type in to a search box? What are the exact words or phrases they would use?

3. Use these search word and phrases in Google and see who is on page 1? These aer your main competitors. If your business is already listed in the top 3 search results for all f your erms then you may bot need help from an SEO consultant in Northern Ireland.

4. If your business does not appear in these search results on page 1, then it is probably worth your time to spend 15 minutes on the phone with someone like me 0- if only to have your questions answered and find our why your site is not where it should be.

"

"We started our business after leaving comfortable jobs, confident that there were customers out there who wanted what we offered. After 3 months our money was running out and we were beginning to panic. Contrary to our belief - when we built it - they did not come! A chance introduction to Adrian McGivern  put us on the path of business sanity once more. Within 4-5 weeks Adrian took our website from no-where to page 1 and we began to get customers. The customers were there - they just didn't know we existed until Adrian got us found.
On top of that, not only did Adrian get us found on the web, he helped us put together an amazing marketing system that helps us generate lots of business through deliberate referrals and has helped us develop our sales process to a point where we can confidently convert 1 in every 2-3 enquiries into clients.
We are extremely happy to have met Adrian McGivern when we did" [Brian Hanley - Wills and Estate Planning Service]

SEO is not the Savior for every business

Not every business can or should be saved from extinction. Businiesses who treat their customers badly, or rip them off, or defraud others deserve to go - as quickly as possible.
Legitimate, hardworking businesses who offer great products and services that help their customers, clients or patients deserve the help they need to develop their businesses and grow.

An SEO consultant in Northern Ireland (like me!) can help you get found on the top of the search results for the key words and phrases that your customers are searching for.

Quick note - lest you be led astray by some fast talking SEO sales person... Your clients are probably NOT searching for your business by it's name. If they were, your SEO efforts would be a whole lot easier. But they probably are not. Well maybe they are if your business is a really popular and recognised brand. Most likely they are searching for the products or services that you provide - e.g. "roofing repair Belfast" or "new car tyres Omagh" or "replacement PVC windows in Eniskillen".

Finding the right SEO consultant in Northern Ireland

How do you know when you have the right SEO consultant for your business?

I think a good starting point is to talk to a few. Get a feel for their understanding of your business needs. Do they understand your business model? Do they sound like they know what they are talking about when discussing your business niche, your competition, your customers?

I think I'm an above average (actually I think I'm in the top 10% but don't want to come across as arrogant because I'm not (arrogant)). I'm a really good marketing and SEO consultant in Northern Ireland and the UK and Ireland overall.
I've got 20 years of experience as a business owner - in real businesses in construction and service businesses - so I know all about the pressure of cashflow, employees and keeping the wheels turning. I think THAT, plus I'm a certified marketing consultant. I'va also got an MBA and an engineering degree (I was an electrical and manufacturing engineer for 12 years at the start of my career - and those skills haven't gone to waste either). All in all, I'm probably a LOT more knowledgeable and skilled than 99% of my competitors. I'm actually pretty humble too!

Ignorance is not biss. It could be the competitor or the changing market that you are unaware of - that will kill your business.

A good marketing consultant will help you in ways that you have not yet considered. I'm not referring to all the shiny new toys that are available to businesses - to help with marketing. Sometimes it is the simple things that can be the most valuable - like helping you to identify who your best prospects and customers really are - and uncovering their real reasons for buying your services.

How to do Search Engine Optimisation

If you have read the article so far, you will know a little about SEO and what search engine optimisation is about. Essentially it is the work that is required to get your website found at the top of the search engines.

Can you do search engine optimisation yourself or do you need a great SEO consultant in Northern Ireland to do it for you?

There certainly are some aspects of SEO that you can do - or let me be more accurate - there are certain things that you can do to help the search engine optimisation on your website.

It is not realistic to expect someone with a little or no previous technical SEO experience to be able to optimise a website - unless there is no competition for the terms you are chasing - but in that event - why would you want to rank for terms that there is no competition for (it means that there is probably no demand either!).

Here are a few things you can do to help the search engine optimisation on your website:

1. Write content regularly. Google likes to see regular, fresh, quality content that is relevant to your business topic.  You've heard about people blogging. This is blogging! At least one a month but the more often, the better. Google rewards those websites that provide unique, quality relevant content. You should write articles based on a key word or phrase and the articles should be a minimum of 500 words in length.

2. Unique content is required. This means you need to write the article from scratch - not copy someone else's article form another website. Google can spot content that has been copied and then can apply a penalty to the guilty site. Not good!

3. Content needs to be written for the reader. In other words, write an article that you can be proud of. If you write a load of rubbish and people read it - how would that reflect on you and your business. Don't be tempted to throw a bunch of words on a page and stuff it with the keywords or phrases. It's bad for your business.

Get these three items in hand and you'll have a good chance to jump ahead of your competition. content plays a big part in search engine optimisation - but it's far from the only piece...

These next items are only mentioned briefly as they begin to get a little technical and doing them incorrectly will have a negative impact - not recommended unless you know what you are doing!

a. Content structure - so that the search engines know what the article is about and what the priority is in terms of keyword/phrase.

b. Onsite linking - how does this article relate to other similar pieces of content. Are they supporting or cornerstone content.

c. Schema mark up. Schema is a way of adding coding to your website that helps the search engines understand it.

d. Image optimisation - how do any images you use on your page relate to the content and support it?

e. Video optimisation - videos can enhance the content form both the human reader  and the search engine perspective.

f. Map optimisation - helps the search engine understand and apply local relevance to your website.

g. Offsite optimisation. Primarily link building from other relevant and authority sites which helps promote your website as an authority on your subject. Offsite also includes other aspects such as citations and embeds.

h. Social signals. social signals such as mentions and shares can have a positive impact on the ranking of your website and these are often touted by lesser mortal SEO's and (socal media marketing managers uurrggh) as being critical. But they are not. The presence of branded social and web 2.0 profiles are a signal to the search engines that your's is a real business and not some little sideline project.

i. I should have placed this near the top of the list - but competitor analysis is something that is vital if you want to get found ahead of your competition. essentially, i'll take the top 3-4 of your competitors and reverse engineer their websites to see what they are doing to rank. I've no interest in copying them. What I'm looking for are the gaps in their SEO efforts that I can expose and take advantage of. To get ahead of your competitors, you site must perform better in all aspects.

Yes this takes work. It is not easy nor is it quick.

But - the advantage to be gained by being number 1 in the search results can not be ignored. It is the difference between being extremely busy and profitable - and being able to pick and choose your customers/jobs. If you are not busy, you end up accepting work or customers that you would otherwise not entertain! Beggars can't be choosers.

There are may other aspects but as you can see the list that I've p[resented is getting a little technical for most people - I've probably bored you enough at this point anyway?

Rather than try to cure your insomnia, I wanted to help you get a better understanding of what an SEO in Northern Ireland actually does to earn their crust!

So to summarise - here are the three most important points you should keep in mind if you want your website to lead the pack. Search engine optimisation should no longer be a complete mystery to you now. If you have read this far, you will be aware of the basic requirements for getting your website found at the top of the search results.

Here are the three most important factors once more:

  • Keyword research. Know where the search volume is and how to compete for it
  • Quality relevant content. Written for the reader but with the search engine in mind
  • Onsite interlinking of content. To show how the article relates to other content

Get these right and you will be well on your way to out gunning your competition for new business enquiries.

The thing that saddens me most is that lots of business owners are mis-led by web designers into thinking that they can have a "nice clean looking website" that will help their business.  That by the way is web designer speak for a site that has nice images and photos but very little text.

What absolute rubbish!

If you don't have sufficient content on your site (structured correctly) - the web crawlers/ search engines will have no way to determine what your site is about. None at all.

Search engines do not judge the value of your site on the quality of the pictures and graphics. The value is in the content.

Remember when you were growing up, you parents told you never to judge a book by it's cover? Well the search engines took that statement VERY literally. they judge the websites by the content, then structure, then internal linking, then external linking. Nowhere in the search algorithm is there a part that looks at pretty pictures and places a higher value on one over another.

So if you are reading this and you are thinking of having a new site designed with pretty pictures and very little text - think again or your phones will remain very silent!
